Nugget’s 1st rounder out, City Council meeting, & Denver stereotypes

Good morning, Denver!

This past weekend's heat advisory had us all feeling like we were auditioning for a role as a raisin. We took on the sun and let’s just say we’re sporting a new lobster look today 🦞

In today’s scoop:

  • Nugget’s 1st rounder out

  • City Council meeting

  • Denver stereotypes

Let’s jump into it.

RAPID REPORTS

⚾️ Michael Toglia made history as the first Colorado switch-hitter to smash three homers in a game, leading the Rockies to an 8-5 win over the Mets yesterday. With Ezequiel Tovar adding two homers and Brennan Doyle another, the Rockies hit a season-high six home runs.

🏀 Tough break for the Nugget’s new pick— first-rounder, DaRon Holmes II, will miss the season after tearing his right Achilles in the NBA Summer League opener. The former Dayton star had an impressive debut with 11 points and seven rebounds before the injury.

🏔 According to a Colorado Polling Institute survey, many Denver stereotypes are spot on! From June 13-18, researchers found:

  • 🌲 72% of Denverites have hiked, biked, or skied in the past year

  • 🍺 54% enjoyed a craft beer, while 33% purchased marijuana.

  • 🎶 40% attended an event at Red Rocks.

  • 🐕 50% own a dog, and 68% have pets.

  • 🚴‍♀️ 30% reported biking to work or school

  • 👧🏻 20% have children under 18

🗳 Denver City Council will decide today on a measure for the November ballot to allow noncitizens to become police officers and firefighters. This would help fill public safety roles and include permanent residents and DACA recipients. Applicants must have work authorization. Police Chief Ron Thomas supports the move to diversify the department.

⚖️ On the agenda for today’s City Council meeting:

  • A resolution approving an agreement with Aramark Sports and Entertainment Services, LLC by adding three months for a new ending date of 01-31-2025 for food and beverage services, concessions, catering and other services at the Denver Coliseum and Red Rocks Ampitheater, citywide.

The meeting is at 3:30PM in the City Council Chambers at Cathy Reynolds City Council Chamber 1437 Bannock Street, Room 450. The public is welcome to attend or watch live on Zoom here.
