QUICK HEADLINES

✊🏽 Juneteenth: free parking and closed doors

As Colorado honors Juneteenth with a new state holiday, expect a mid-week pause as government offices, libraries, and many city buildings close their doors today. However, your favorite eateries and shops will mostly stay open, so double-check their hours and enjoy the bonus of free street parking in Denver!

🚊 RTD night owls face rail repair woes

In response to safety concerns, RTD is fast-tracking repairs on the Southeast Corridor, causing late-night service interruptions on the E, H, and R lines through Thursday. Expect bus shuttles on the E Line after 11:30PM, but no shuttles for the R Line; check your schedules to avoid a rail fail!

LOCAL BUSINESSES

🎷 Preserving El Chapultepec

Historic Denver and Monfort Companies have struck a harmonious chord, agreeing to preserve key elements of the iconic El Chapultepec building while incorporating modern design. This new plan, which includes maintaining the brick corner and iconic signs, marks a collaborative win for both preservationists and developers. The agreement showcases the power of dialogue in balancing heritage and progress, ensuring Denver's cultural legacy remains vibrant.

SPORTS

⚾️ You got to be kidding me

A blown check-swing call turned the Rockies’ victory into a nightmare, leading to a go-ahead three-run homer by the Dodgers' Teoscar Hernandez. With the Rockies up 9-4 in the ninth, umpire Lance Barksdale ruled Hernandez didn’t swing, despite protests, and Hernandez promptly blasted the next pitch into oblivion. The Rockies’ meltdown, capped by manager Bud Black’s ejection and right fielder Jake Cave’s fury, ended in an 11-9 loss, proving once again that baseball is a game of inches—and sometimes bad calls.

CIVIL

💰 Can direct cash payments help alleviate homelessness?

A groundbreaking study from the Denver Basic Income Project says yes. Tracking 800 participants, it found nearly half secured housing within a year, reducing public service use. Funded by donations and city money, the project highlights how universal basic income can transform lives, providing stability and hope while saving public dollars. The project aims to extend and replicate its success, pushing for policy changes to support basic income programs.
